As a dietitian, Alcohol Awareness Month is a reminder that even small, routine drinking habits can influence our energy levels, sleep, metabolism, mental health, and overall well-being, often in ways we don’t immediately recognize.

Alcohol awareness isn’t about labeling behaviors as “good” or “bad.” It’s about taking a step back and honestly reflecting:
• How does alcohol fit into my routine?
• How does it affect how I feel—physically and mentally?
• Is it supporting or working against my goals?

This kind of reflection creates space for more intentional choices. It also helps us identify patterns that may be impacting our relationships, work, or health, and opens the door to building habits that better serve us.

The coming of Spring is always a reminder of why keeping cultural recipes on my plate is something that matters to me.

Easter was always filled with foods that felt both comforting and meaningful, with recipes passed down, made together, and never measured too precisely.

Ejjeh, the herb-packed egg and parsley fritter loaded with fresh parsley, green onions, garlic, and spices, traditionally pan-fried, but baked here for a lighter take.

Armenian choreg, a soft, slightly sweet braided bread that was always served with coffee and Armenian cheese.

The tradition of dyeing eggs deep red with onion skins, and egg cracking that I remember playing every year with so many family members.

Armenian Jajukh, a cool, garlicky yogurt dip with spinach (or cucumber) that I always inhale this time of year with pita bread.

As a dietitian, keeping cultural foods in my routine isn’t something I push aside, it’s something I prioritize.

Food is more than nutrients, its identity, memory, and connection. You don’t have to give up the foods you grew up with to eat well—you can honor them and make them part of your plate.

We’ve reached a point where confidence is being mistaken for credibility, and that’s a problem. Especially in nutrition, where misinformation can directly impact people’s health, relationship with food, and trust in their bodies.

If a claim can’t be backed by research, explained clearly, or adapted to individual needs, it’s crap, straight up.

We have to stop giving so much influence to voices that prioritize engagement over accuracy.

Because the louder misinformation gets, the harder it becomes for people to make informed, sustainable choices.

Follow people who can explain the why, cite the evidence, and admit when things aren’t black and white.

International Women’s Day exists to recognize women’s achievements across science, healthcare, leadership, sports, business, and every other space we’ve had to fight to enter. It’s also about advocating for equity, safety, opportunity, and the basic human rights women are still working to secure.

And if anyone is still confused about why it’s necessary, the ongoing revelations around the Epstein files are a pretty clear reminder that systems grossly fail to to protect women, and that power and accountability don’t always work in women’s favor.

International Women’s Day is also about making the world safer for the girls who will become the next generation of women, so they grow up in a world where their safety isn’t negotiable, their voices are taken seriously, and their rights aren’t something up for debate.

If I have to listen to Casey Means or RFK Jr. spew nonsense one more time I will jump head first off a cliff… so instead I’m channeling that energy into what I can control: sharing accurate, evidence-based nutrition advice during National Nutrition Month.

If you’re confused by the noise online, you’re not alone. Nutrition shouldn’t feel extreme, fear-based, or all-or-nothing. It should be practical, sustainable, and grounded in actual science.

Despite what gets clicks online, balanced eating looks like:
• Eating consistently to support metabolic health
• Including protein, carbohydrates, and fats at meals
• Prioritizing fiber for gut health, cholesterol management, and glycemic control
• Making adjustments based on labs, activity, medications, and individual needs
• Leaving room for flexibility so it’s sustainable long-term

It doesn’t look like what a wellness influencer “eats in a day” and is not one size fits all. Context and your whole health matters than a grifter’s opinion.

🚨New publication alert from our lab at the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine.

We looked at nearly 500 active-duty U.S. Army Soldiers to see whether how they eat is linked to how well they perform on the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT).

The Healthy Eating Score (HES-7) was used to measure overall diet quality. We found:
• Soldiers who scored higher on healthy eating also scored higher on their fitness test.
• For every 1-point increase in healthy eating score, fitness scores increased by about 2 points.
• Soldiers with the lowest diet quality scored 19–30 points lower on the fitness test compared to those with the highest diet quality.
• Those who reported eating a high-protein diet performed better on the fitness test.
• Soldiers who described their eating style as “high protein” also had higher overall diet quality.

As a dietitian, this reinforces what we know but don’t always quantify well: nutrition is not separate from performance.

You don’t have to be in the military for this to apply. Whether you’re training for a race, lifting consistently, or just trying to feel strong and capable in your daily life, nutrition is a performance tool. 💪🏼
